Movement Exploration for primary grades
I attended AOSA National Conference in November 2019. While there, I attended a session about movement in primary grades, specifically focused on pre-K and K. Most of the activities I thought were relevant to grades K-2, and a few I thought could easily fly with upper elementary students as well.
One of the most impactful thing I heard at this session was that exploration free of meter is just as valuable as exploration in meter. Allowing students to explore and create in their own time at their own speed is something I usually bypass because I am quick to force students into beat/meter/rhythm. This session was a good reminder to slow down and allow students to create freely at their own pace.
One of my favorite activities from this session involved popsicle sticks and jar lids. Students took supplies and created a “stick figure” drawing on the floor. Then, when the music began, all of the students took a gallery walk around the room and created each other’s stick figure drawings with their bodies. The musical example the presenter used was from Rhythmically Moving 7, a resource we own district wide.
